Speech and Language Therapy

The school has the support of a part time Speech and Language Therapist who is employed by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Therapist is involved with students in all year groups.

The Speech and Language Therapist works with pupils who have specific difficulties in one or more of the following areas of communication:


  • understanding spoken language
  • producing spoken language
  • speech sounds
  • oral movements
  • fluency
  • voice
  • the social use of language.


The Therapist also works with pupils who have eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

The Speech and Language Therapist works collaboratively with parents, school staff, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy staff to maximise the communication skills of students and to ensure safe eating, drinking and swallowing skills for students at school, at home and during leisure / respite activities. Speech and Language Therapy advice is incorporated into all aspects of daily life.

A variety of Speech and Language Therapy provision is in place to suit the range of communication needs of pupils. The Speech and Language Therapist assesses pupils, provides therapy and advice and guidance to school staff, they contribute to review meetings, provide training to staff working with the child at school / respite centres and parents, assess students who may need communication aids and provide ongoing training and support for the student using the aid, assess, advise and provide training on various communication systems e.g. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Makaton signing and assess and advise on eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

Therapy activities may be delivered within the classroom by the Speech and Language Therapists or by school staff or in individual or group communication sessions.

The Speech and Language Therapist is involved in supporting transition when students leave school and will refer students to adult Speech and Language Therapy services if appropriate.
